Wei Luo, a PhD student at the AI-Meat Lab, Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU), has been selected for the 2024 Young Talent Support Program for Doctoral Students, initiated by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST). As the first PhD student to join the AI-Meat Lab, Wei’s selection marks an important milestone in the lab’s commitment to cultivating outstanding young researchers in food science.
The CAST program is a national initiative designed to identify and support promising doctoral students with strong research potential and innovative capabilities. It aims to foster the development of future scientific leaders through academic mentorship, research training, scientific exchange, and professional development opportunities.
Wei joined the AI-Meat Lab in September 2023 under the supervision of Prof. Haizhou Wu. Before beginning his doctoral studies, he established a strong research foundation in food microbiology and processing technologies, particularly in ultrasound-assisted microbial inactivation and food quality evaluation. His research achievements include 12 publications in scientific journals ranked in the top two quartiles of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) journal classification system, including nine as first author. His representative studies have appeared in Ultrasonics Sonochemistry, Food Research International, and Food Chemistry: X.
During his doctoral studies, Wei has focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of lipid oxidation in meat systems, particularly the roles of hemoglobin and other pro-oxidative factors in meat quality deterioration. His research aims to identify key oxidation pathways and develop targeted strategies to improve oxidative stability and meat quality.
To further strengthen his international research experience, Wei has also secured an opportunity to conduct joint doctoral research at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, under the guidance of Prof. Mark P. Richards, an internationally recognized expert in meat and food chemistry. This collaboration will provide valuable opportunities to advance fundamental research on lipid oxidation and explore innovative approaches to meat preservation.
Wei’s selection represents a significant achievement for both him and the AI-Meat Lab, highlighting the lab’s dedication to high-quality doctoral training and international scientific collaboration. The AI-Meat Lab will continue supporting young researchers in pursuing innovative science and contributing to advances in meat quality, safety, and sustainable food processing.
